The Sandvik compact bucket wheel excavator, including the beltwagon, has been delivered to Mátra Kraftwerk AG in Hungary. The new unit will increase production capacity and also raise productivity at the Bükkábrány opencast lignite mine.
Sandvik’s cooperation and business relationship with Mátra Kraftwerk AG in Hungary goes back many years. In 1986, Sandvik supplied Mátra Kraftwerk AG with three giant open pit mining units, a bucket wheel excavator, a beltwagon and a spreader; units which have been operating successfully ever since.
In 2007, the Materials Handling business division of Sandvik Mining and Construction was awarded a contract to supply a compact bucket wheel excavator, including the beltwagon, to Mátra Kraftwerk AG. The assembly of the entire unit was conducted according to a demanding schedule of only eight months, with up to some 130 erectors working on the site every day. At the end of June 2009, the first extraction level of the Bükkábrány opencast mine trial operations commenced on schedule and both machines began normal operations in September. The new entire unit will increase production capacity and also raise productivity at the Bükkábrány opencast lignite mine.
The new bucket wheel excavator with a total weight of around 1,650 tons has a 28-meter (92-foot) boom on which the 12-meter (40-foot) diameter bucket wheel is located. The power output of the bucket wheel alone, fitted with 16 buckets, is around 1,100 kilowatt - the entire power output of the machine amounts to 3,200 kilowatt. The entire unit (compact bucket wheel excavator including beltwagon) is designed to generate a conveying output of around 6,700 lcm/h (8,760 lcy/h) or an annual capacity of 12 million bank cubic meters (15.7 million bank cubic yards).
This project was of great significance to Sandvik Mining and Construction. It has enabled the company to take another important step into the European open pit mining sector and once again demonstrated its competence as one of the world's leading suppliers of open pit mining equipment.
Sandvik has the long term experience to design, manufacture and install virtually any kind of bulk materials handling system. From continuous opencast mining systems to integrated stacking and reclaiming systems for mines, terminals, power plants and port facilities, the company offers total solutions and turnkey installations.
